IPL 2024: Sanju Samson reflects on the unfortunate collision with Avesh Khan during a catch attempt in PBKS vs RR clash

In a nail-biting last-over showdown on Saturday (April 13), Rajasthan Royals (RR) displayed remarkable composure to edge past the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and secure their fifth victory of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The match unfolded as a tense low-scoring encounter, with PBKS setting a target of 148 runs for RR, who clinched the win in the penultimate delivery of the game. In the gripping final over, Shimron Hetmyer, exhibiting nerves of steel, capitalized on loose deliveries to smash two crucial sixes, sealing a dramatic victory for RR.

    Punjab Kings’ struggles

The contest began with PBKS batting first in their home ground. However, the absence of Shikhar Dhawan dealt a blow to the hosts, who found themselves struggling at 52/4 within the initial ten overs. Despite the slower pitch conditions, the lower-order resilience was tested, compounded by exceptional fielding efforts. Yet, amidst the battle, a peculiar incident unfolded involving RR’s captain Sanju Samson and the bowler Avesh Khan.

Ashutosh Sharma’s capitalization on a dropped chance

In the 19th over, Avesh delivered a fuller ball outside off, tempting PBKS’s Ashutosh Sharma to go for a big shot. Nevertheless, Ashutosh’s attempt resulted in a top edge, sending the ball skywards towards the short mid-wicket region. Both Avesh and Samson sprinted towards the descending ball, but a miscommunication led to a fumbled catch, evoking frustration between the two RR players. The momentary lapse saw Ashutosh capitalizing on the opportunity, rallying to score two sixes and a four in his unbeaten 16-ball 31, as Punjab concluded their innings at 147 for eight in 20 overs.

Sanju Samson’s perspective on the accidental clash with Avesh Khan

After RR managed to pull off a thrilling run chase, Samson found humor in Rajasthan’s repeated encounters with high-catching instances. Samson acknowledged the challenge posed by the crowd noise, conceding that it’s nearly impossible for players to hear each other’s calls during high-pressure moments like catching. Nonetheless, he emphasized the importance of fast bowlers stepping up in such situations, noting that wicketkeepers generally have an easier time with these catches compared to fielders.

“We had few funny instances from last year and this year. But I am really happy that everyone is eager to go and catch. I would be very sad if people are just staying away and not catching it,” Samson said in a post-match presentation.

“It gets a bit tough actually – the stadium is full of noise and when people call, we are looking at the ball, we can’t look who is coming. I need to tell my fast bowlers that it’s a bit easier to catch with the gloves instead of hands,” the 29-year-old concluded.

PBKS won the toss and chose to field first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. This decision turned out to be advantageous for PBKS as their bowlers provided a brilliant start, putting early pressure on the SRH batting lineup.

    Early dismissals

In the early overs of the match, PBKS bowler Arshdeep Singh made a significant impact, grabbing two crucial wickets. Travis Head, the dangerous Australian opener, fell victim to Arshdeep’s delivery, thanks to a sensational catch by PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

On the second delivery of the fourth over in SRH’s innings, Arshdeep delivered a tempting outside off stump delivery, inducing Head into a fancy shot. IPL 2024, Match 17: Stats Review: Second highest successful chase at Ahmedabad and other stats from GT vs PBKS

In another thriller played put by these two teams, Punjab Kings looked down and out at one stage in the chase, but held on to their nerve and finally managed to defeat Gujarat Titans by three wickets chasing a mammoth 199.

Punjab Kings put the Titans in to bat, who on the back of an inspired performance by skipper Shubman Gill (89 off 48) put up 199/4. Sai Sudharsan (33 off 19) and Rahul Tewatia (23 off 8) also helped in the cause.

In reply, PBKS never really got going at the top and were reduced to 70/4 in the ninth over with the most significant contribution coming from Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 24). Even then the Punjab Kings took things steady despite losing Sikandar Raza. Jitesh Sharma (16 off 8) was struggling at the start but his two consecutive sixes off Rashid Khan made it easier for debutant Ashutosh Sharma (31 off 17) to complement the true shining star of Punjab Kings in this match, Shashank Singh (61 off 29). Coming in when 110 runs were needed in almost 11 overs, he guided the chase even while both Raza and Jitesh Sharma were struggling.

IPL 2024: Salary of players retained by Punjab Kings (PBKS)

The cricketing world eagerly awaits the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 players’ auction scheduled to unfold in Dubai on December 19. With 333 cricketers set to enter the bidding fray, the stage is set for intense competition, and several players are poised to ignite bidding wars.

Of the 333 players in the auction pool, 214 are Indian cricketers, and 119 hail from international talent pools, including two players from associate nations. Among these, 116 cricketers are capped, while 215 are uncapped players, including two from associate nations.

    Least number of players released

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have chosen to retain the core of their team, releasing only five players ahead of the auction. The released players include Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Mohit Rathee, Baltej Dhanda, Raj Angad Bawa, and Shahrukh Khan. Notably, Shahrukh, the explosive power-hitter from Tamil Nadu, was the most expensive release, having been acquired for a hefty sum of INR 9 crore.

    Core unit retained

Punjab Kings’ decision to retain a majority of their players showcases their commitment to building a formidable squad. The core team features prominent names such as Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Liam Livingstone, Arshdeep Singh, and Kagiso Rabada.

The retention of English all-rounder Curran, who was bought for a staggering INR 18.5 crore, surprised many experts, but it underlines PBKS’s determination to maintain a competitive edge in the lucrative league. With the least number of players released, Punjab Kings’ strategic move sets the stage for a captivating auction where teams will vie for top-notch talent to bolster their squads.
