IPL 2026: [Explained] Why Punjab Kings players are wearing black armbands in today’s match against SRH?

Fans tuning into the IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh noticed a somber detail before the first ball was bowled – every PBKS player took the field wearing black armbands. The gesture quickly sparked curiosity and concern across social media, with many wondering about the reason behind it.

The franchise later confirmed that the tribute was in memory of the victims of the tragic Vrindavan boat accident, which occurred just a day before the match. The heartbreaking incident involved a boat carrying pilgrims that capsized in the Yamuna River near Keshi Ghat in Mathura. Reports indicated that between 25 and 30 passengers were on board when the accident took place, and at least 10 lives were lost, many of them pilgrims from Punjab.

For PBKS, this tragedy hit particularly close to home. The black armbands were not just a symbolic gesture but a heartfelt mark of respect for those who lost their lives and for the grieving families left behind.

    Punjab Kings’ official statement

In an official statement, the franchise clarified the intent behind the tribute: “Punjab Kings players wore black armbands during today’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh on Saturday, as a mark of respect for those affected by the tragic boat accident in Vrindavan,” the statement read.

The team also took to social media to express their condolences, stating: “Deeply saddened by the tragic accident. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims. May their souls rest in peace,” the team posted on X.

“The franchise stands in solidarity with the grieving families and the community during this difficult time,” PBKS added.

Sunrisers Hyderabad posts a formidable total

While the tragedy cast a shadow over the game, the match itself delivered high-intensity action. Sunrisers Hyderabad, after being asked to bat first, came out with an aggressive approach that immediately put the Punjab bowlers under pressure. Openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma launched a blistering assault, racing to 105 runs in just the first six overs.

Abhishek was the standout performer, playing a sensational knock of 74 off just 28 balls. His innings, packed with eight towering sixes, set the tone for SRH’s dominance in the early stages. Head provided strong support, ensuring that the momentum remained firmly with the Orange Army.

However, the home team showed resilience despite the emotional backdrop. Shashank Singh turned the tide briefly with a crucial over, dismissing both Head and Abhishek in quick succession. His breakthrough offered PBKS a glimmer of hope and brought some balance back into the contest.

Even so, SRH managed to maintain control and posted a formidable total of 219/6, putting significant pressure on Punjab’s batting lineup. While the scoreboard reflected a high-scoring encounter, the emotional weight of the day lingered in the background.
