Brandon Aiyuk’s attempt to get away from the San Francisco 49ers took another turn on Wednesday when the wide receiver took to social media to again call for his release from the team.
Aiyuk posted a video on Instagram saying that he will sign with the Washington Commanders “tomorrow” if the 49ers release him.
49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk keeps trying to get away from team
In the video, Aiyuk is seen holding a football with a Commanders logo on it with a caption that reads over two parts: “The best sport in the world. The best league in the world, the best team in the world. And I almost forgot.. The best WR in the world.”
This all comes just a couple of days after Aiyuk posted an initial video to social media where he simply said, “Go Commanders.”
Aiyuk’s saga with the 49ers has been a tumultuous one to say the least, including holdouts, trade requests, injuries, and Aiyuk’s very public attempt to get his release.
49ers general manager John Lynch has already said it is safe to say that Aiyuk has played his last game with the team, but he has been trying to find a trade partner to at least salvage something out of the situation.
That is going to be difficult to do.
Aiyuk is still only 28 years old, but has played just seven games since the start of the 2024 season and has proven himself to be a sizable distraction on a pretty consistent basis over the past few years. Some teams are willing to take that trade-off if they are getting a top-tier player. There is good reason to ask if Aiyuk is still a top-tier player or is capable of playing at that level.
He also seems to have made up his mind on playing for one team, and one team only. Why would another team even think about a trade for a guy who’s proven to be a headache and has already seemingly made up his mind for what is next?
At some point, the 49ers are going to be further ahead just to release him and get it over with.
Aiyuk seems to be taking the approach that if he causes enough headaches, he might actually get them to do it.
