Commentator Link Lauren reacted to a recent report about Meghan Markle and her alleged reasons for stepping back from royal life. Citing information from a Radar Online article published on April 24, Lauren uploaded a video to X on April 30, where he said:
“Meghan Markle, one reason she wanted to leave the royal family, allegedly, (was because) she heard that Prince William, when he became king, he would be in charge of the purse strings. And then little George…when he becomes king someday…He would then be in charge of delegating and doling out the purse and what trips you get to go on.”
Link Lauren characterized Meghan Markle’s reported reaction as strongly resistant to that arrangement, suggesting that Markle preferred independence over financial oversight by senior royals.
“And Meghan Markle wasn’t going to have that. Meghan Markle was like, no, no, no, no, no. I’d rather go sell jams, jellies, and dog biscuits than have Prince George tell me what to spend. So let me read you,” Lauren added.
As per the celebrity net worth website, former actress, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Meghan Markle, has a net worth of $60 million.
Lauren then reiterated the report’s core assertion, explaining that Meghan allegedly decided to step away from royal duties after learning about this potential financial structure.
“So Radar Online reports, Meghan reportedly wanted out of royal life after learning that Prince William would ultimately control the couple’s funding,” Lauren added.
Further elaborating on the claim (as mentioned in the Radar Online report), Lauren explained that the report alleged that Markle was concerned about a “long-term financial dependence” on Prince William, who would be “the future king” and then would “effectively” oversee “how much money Meghan and Prince Harry would receive for the rest of their lives.”
What else did Link Lauren say about Meghan Markle?

In the aforementioned video, Link Lauren addressed claims surrounding Meghan Markle and her reported reasons for stepping back from royal duties.
Referring to the report by Radar Online, Lauren noted that while the outlet suggested internal tensions influenced the couple’s decision to leave royal life, those claims had been disputed by sources close to Meghan Markle.
“While a source close to Meghan denied the narrative, the (Radar Online) report ties the alleged tension to the couple’s eventual 2020 royal exit and push for financial independence outside the monarchy,” Lauren remarked.
The commentator went on to share his interpretation of Markle’s motivations, suggesting that her personal history may have shaped her approach to financial independence within the royal framework. He explained:
“So I believe this. I think Meghan Markle, she really has been on her own for most of her life. She probably said, “You know what? I don’t want these people in charge of our finances.” And we also heard stories, even back in 2018, when they went to Australia for the first time, she allegedly wanted to be paid for that trip.”
He further argued that such an approach conflicted with long-standing royal conventions, emphasizing that the monarchy has historically maintained a strict separation between public duty and private financial gain.
“That’s not what the queen was about. It’s not what the monarchy had ever done,” he said, referencing the principles associated with the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Continuing his criticism, Lauren expressed strong views on the use of royal titles for commercial purposes, asserting that members of the royal family were expected to uphold certain standards of conduct.
“If you’re in a public role, if you’re a member of the royal family, you don’t dine out on your title. You don’t use your title to sell candles with your kids’ names on it. You don’t do low-down, dirty, scummy things like that,” he said.
He also pointed to alleged instances during past royal tours, particularly in 2018, claiming there were attempts to combine philanthropic engagements with paid appearances. According to Lauren, this approach reflected a broader desire to monetize royal duties, noting that activities such as a “women’s retreat” were part of this effort.
He suggested that the couple, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, wanted to “get paid and make money while on royal tours,” adding that the monarchy’s structure leaves little room for such flexibility and operates on an “all in or all out” basis.
Lauren then described what he saw as the rigid framework upheld by senior royals, attributing this consistency to both past and present leadership. He remarked that the system followed by King Charles III would likely continue under Prince William, stating it was “either 100% one way or nothing.”
Expanding on this, Lauren speculated that Prince William could take an even stricter stance in the future regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
He suggested that William might have little patience for what he described as ongoing controversies. He speculated that Prince William would have “no time to entertain Harry, Meghan, or their ‘delusions’,” and could “either strip them of their titles or remove them from the line of succession.”
Finally, Lauren reiterated his criticism of using royal status for smaller-scale public engagements, referencing the reported women’s retreat as an example. He characterized the event as poorly executed, describing it as an “utter calamity,” and argued that such appearances undermined the perceived dignity of royal titles when used outside traditional frameworks.
At present, Meghan Markle is focused on her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard (formerly known as “As Ever”), while also investing in AI fashion technology and producing content for Netflix.
