    Lamine Yamal was spotted wearing a customised ‘Ego Yamal’ hairband during Spain’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash with Austria, and the reason has come to light.

    Yamal is enjoying his debut World Cup appearance with the Spanish national team. The Barcelona star has played every match for his country at the World Cup and scored in the group stage against Saudi Arabia.

    During Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria, Yamal wore a hairband with the inscription ‘Ego Yamal’. According to COPE via Fabrizio Romano, the text on the hairband is a direct response to his haters on TikTok.

    Some TikTok users have used the word ‘Ego Yamal’ to criticise Yamal as being arrogant. Rather than let the insults affect him, the 18-year-old has clapped back at his critics by embracing the nickname and displaying it on the biggest stage.

    Lamine Yamal is relishing a match-up with Cristiano Ronaldo when Spain and Portugal clash at the Dallas Stadium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Monday (July 6).

    In a post-match interview after beating Austria, the Barcelona star was asked to pick his preferred Round of 16 opponent between Portugal and Croatia. He expressed confidence in Spain’s ability, irrespective of the opponent, but said it would be an honour to face Ronaldo.

    “Well, I don’t really care – Croatia or Portugal. It would be an honour, obviously, to play against Cristiano, but I’m focused on winning the game, and I don’t really care who advances between the two of them,” Yamal said (via DAZN).

    Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 to set up a meeting with Spain. The match is a repeat of the 2025 Nations League final, which Spain lost 5-3 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
