Journalist Ben Jacobs has opened up about Arsenal‘s reported pursuit of Julian Alvarez. He revealed that while his release clause makes it unlikely, the north London side are open to any possibility.
The Gunners are reportedly looking to strengthen their attack after winning the Premier League title last season. They have been heavily linked with Alvarez for a potential move. However, his contract with Atletico Madrid, which expires in 2030, has a release clause worth €500 million.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that some clubs in the UEFA Champions League can get it done for a cheaper amount. He reported (h/t afcstuff):
“Julian Alvarez is the dream target for Arsenal. His release clause is €500m, but my information is that there are provisions for certain Champions League clubs to do it cheaper, but cheaper is still probably out of the price range of all clubs.”
Jacobs added that even if it was around €150 million, there would be added taxes as well. However, he pointed out that Andrea Berta signed Alvarez at Atletico Madrid and hence, he will be aware of the details of the deal.
“Maybe Alvarez stays at Atletico, maybe Barcelona come back in, but don’t rule out Arsenal. If there’s a 1% chance of Alvarez moving to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal will move,” he added.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024. He has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 106 games for them.

Earlier this year, Real Madrid had made a statement that they had made a bid for Julian Alvarez, which Atletico Madrid rejected. Barcelona have also been heavily linked with the Argentina striker, along with Arsenal.
Amidst all the speculation about his future, Alvarez spoke to the media during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and said (h/t Sky Sports):
“I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream. It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person.”
Alvarez scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 49 games across competitions for Atletico Madrid last season. However, they failed to win any major trophy, losing on penalties against Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final.
