REPORT: John Cena Classic 

WWE veteran John Cena appeared at Backlash 2026 to announce the John Cena Classic. A new report now sheds more light on the event announced by Cena earlier this year.

At WWE Backlash: Tampa on May 9, The Never Seen 17 showed up at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. He went on to announce the John Cena Classic, where developmental stars of the Stamford-based promotion would get a chance to showcase their skills against established main roster talents from RAW and SmackDown.

Meanwhile, a fresh report from Fightful Select suggested that the event announced by Cena was being targeted for December this year. However, there was also a possibility of that being changed down the line.

Interestingly, WWE has not provided much more information since Cena’s Backlash announcement, and The Franchise Player himself has said he’s not at liberty to give out too many details either.

Prominent reporter had suggested that WWE officials have very little idea about the John Cena Classic

At the recent San Diego ComicCon, The Franchise Player was asked about the John Cena Classic.

Cena noted that he could not reveal much but that the Stamford-based promotion was working on it. This was also discussed during a recent edition of Fightful Select Answers.

Prominent wrestling reporter Sean Ross Sapp said that the initial plan for the event was December 2026. Sapp also noted that it was meant to be a fan-driven, fan-voted event in which developmental talents would get to face main roster talents to showcase their skills during a single night.

Sapp even mentioned that the concept had likely not been thought out too well yet and was hopeful that WWE could work out the finer details. He also claimed that officials in the company had very little idea about the event.

For now, it remains to be seen if the event does take place in December, or whether the global juggernaut takes more time to sort out the finer details.
