The Vikings signed Kyler Murray on a one-year deal after a disappointing 2025 campaign under J.J. McCarthy. He served as the QB1 after missing his entire rookie campaign due to an injury. However, McCarthy once again suffered multiple injuries, limiting him to just 10 games. The Vikings finished with a disappointing 9-8 record.

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Murray with the No.1 pick in 2019. He spent seven seasons with them and posted 20,460 yards and 121 TDs passing. However, last season, Murray saw time in just five games following a foot injury. The team released him in March.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell shares his thoughts on quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy

The competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy for the starting job is continuing to heat up. Last month, on the “Good Morning Football” show, coach Kevin O’Connell discussed this competition.

O’Connell explained how rep count does not matter in this quarterback battle. He also highlighted how play priority during training camp will shift over time.

“Not necessarily something where there’s going to be a need to count the reps,” O’Connell said. “The intent is to provide both guys with what they need throughout the competition and ultimately give us a chance to have a thorough understanding of exactly where we’re at and what’s going to be the best thing for the Minnesota Vikings.”

The Vikings kick off the season with a Week 1 showdown against the Green Bay Packers. It is scheduled for Sept. 13. at 4:25 p.m. ET.
