August has become an especially entertaining month on the NWSL calendar, with clubs using their home matches to celebrate everything from Pride and Black heritage to pop culture and the communities surrounding their teams. While the action on the field remains the main attraction, these themed nights give supporters another reason to attend matches. They also allow clubs to highlight causes, cultures, and fan communities that are important to them.
Several NWSL teams have scheduled particularly notable themed nights throughout August 2026. From Angel City FC’s first-ever Disney Princess Night to Gotham FC and Seattle Reign FC’s Pride celebrations, this month’s matchday calendar offers plenty of memorable events for supporters.
Angel City FC’s Disney Princess Night
Angel City FC is bringing a completely different type of theme to the NWSL this August with its first-ever Disney Princess Theme Night. The club hosted the event on August 16 when it welcomed the Washington Spirit to BMO Stadium.
The collaboration gave supporters an opportunity to embrace Disney’s iconic princess characters, with fans encouraged to attend dressed as their favorite princess or sidekick. The club also incorporated Disney-themed entertainment, photo opportunities, and interactive experiences throughout the stadium.
The event also featured a special halftime appearance from Disney legend and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana in The Princes and the Frog. This brought another connection between the Disney celebration and Angel City’s matchday experience.
“ACFC’s Disney Princess Theme Night celebrates imagination, confidence, and the next generation of dreamers, both on the pitch and in the stands,” said Amy Taylor, CEO of ACFC, according to the club’s official website.
The theme fits naturally with Angel City’s reputation for creating unconventional and entertainment-focused matchday experiences. Rather than simply centering the event around soccer, the club has continued to experiment with ways of making BMO Stadium feel like a larger entertainment destination.
Gotham FC’s Pride Night
Gotham FC celebrated one of its biggest annual events on August 28 when it hosts the Portland Thorns at Sports Illustrated Stadium for Pride Night, presented by Flamingo.
The club has described Pride as an important part of the club’s identity. This makes the August event more than a traditional promotional night. The club has planned a variety of entertainment and interactive experiences throughout the stadium, including performances and activities for supporters. The first 5,000 fans are also scheduled to receive a Pride-themed fan item or one of 5,000 exclusive fanny packs presented by Flamingo. The club has also promoted a halftime Strut Your Pride Parade, giving supporters another opportunity to participate directly in the celebration.
The timing is particularly interesting because Gotham enters the final stretch of the regular season with major ambitions. The club has been among the NWSL’s strongest teams in 2026, meaning that the Pride celebration will take place during an important part of the playoff race.
Bay FC’s Black Heritage Match
Bay FC used its August 23 home match against the Houston Dash to celebrate the Bay Area’s black communities with its annual Black Heritage Match at PayPal Park.
The club described the match as a tribute to black heritage and communities throughout the Bay Area and the United States. The event is designed to recognize black leaders, artists, and athletes while highlighting their contributions to culture and the community.
The match also includes a charitable component. Bay FC announced that supporters can purchase a Black Heritage Tee designed by artist Yonas Tesfai, with the proceeds benefiting Hella Creative and its work to elevate black voices.
The club’s August 20 announcement also confirmed that the match will include recognition for Bay FC midfielder Hannah Bebar, who is nominated for the 2026 Lauren Holiday Impact Award, as well as the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative.
That combination of soccer, local culture, and community work makes Bay FC’s August match one of the month’s most meaningful theme nights.
Seattle Reign FC’s Pride Match
Seattle Reign FC also has Pride at the center of its August calendar. The club hosted its annual Pride Match, presented by Trupanion, on August 14 against Chicago Stars FC at Lumen Field.
Reign FC considers the Pride Match its biggest theme event of the year, with the club emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and Pride within its identity. The match featured a range of activities and entertainment designed to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and create a larger matchday experience.
Among the featured entertainment was a performance from TUSH, which is a well-known Seattle drag collective. The club described the event as a community celebration rather than simply another regular season match.
The Pride Match also continues a long-running tradition for Reign FC. The club’s 2026 schedule announcement identified Pride on August 14 as one of eight major theme matches planned at Lumen Field throughout the season.
Washington Spirit’s Spirit Worldwide Night
Washington Spirit offered another distinctive August celebration with its Spirit Worldwide: Culture Night on August 8.
The event was designed to celebrate the diversity of the Spirit’s players and fanbase through an around the world themed matchday. Rather than focusing on one particular culture, the event recognizes the international background represented within the club and its supporter community.
That makes the event particularly fitting for a league whose player pool includes athletes from numerous countries. The NWSL has increasingly become a destination for international players, and Washington’s Culture Night provides an opportunity to recognize that diversity through the club’s matchday experience.
Chicago Stars FC’s August Themes
Chicago Stars FC also has multiple themed events during August. The club’s promotional calendar includes a Pride match on August 9 against Bay FC and an All In match on August 23 against Racing Louisville FC.
The Pride match included a special Pride patch giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, while the August 23 All In match features a themed scarf for the first 3,000 supporters and an All In match for the first 1,000. The match also includes a police and firefighter appreciation reversible beanie as part of a special ticket package.
Chicago’s schedule demonstrates how clubs are increasingly using multiple matches throughout the season to recognize different parts of their supporter base instead of relying on a single major theme night.
Kansas City Current’s Educator Appreciation Night
Kansas City Current also opened August with a community-focused celebration. The club hosted Educator Appreciation Night on August 1 against Angel City FC at CPKC Stadium.
The event honored education professionals from across the Kansas City region and featured themed activities recognizing educators who support the next generation. While the event took place at the beginning of the month, it fits into the wider pattern of NWSL clubs using August matches to recognize specific communities and groups connected to their cities.
