For this column, normally I pore through highlights looking for a great buildup. But in the era of teams giving away goals from stubbornly playing out of the back, I present you with an example of such a goal. My apologies to Racing Louisville because at least half the teams in NWSL do this often, not always leading to a goal of course.
Here’s how it starts: The keeper, Jordyn Bloomer, had ball in hand after scooping it up on a save of a weak Bay FC shot. As it was not a dead ball scenario, Bay could have put direct pressure on the ball. They did not. But they did position their defending attackers in a manner that offered Bloomer few choices.
