Exactly one year ago, on October 4, 2025, Ajit Agarkar made a statement about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli that looks even more questionable today. While discussing India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the chief selector described the two Indian greats as “non-committal” about the tournament.
One year later, Rohit and Kohli have given perhaps the strongest possible answer — not through arguments, but through their performances.
Both batters have continued scoring heavily in ODI cricket, while their statements since then have also made their World Cup ambitions clearer. Looking at where they stand today, Agarkar may well regret making that comment about two of India’s greatest ODI players.
What Ajit Agarkar Said About Rohit and Kohli
The statement came on October 4, 2025, when India announced their squad for the ODI series in Australia.
Agarkar said that Rohit and Kohli were “non-committal” about the 2027 World Cup. The comment immediately attracted attention because both players were still among India’s biggest names and remained active in ODI cricket.
Since then, the picture has become much clearer.
Kohli has now publicly confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his final World Cup for India. He has also made it clear that winning that tournament remains his ultimate goal.
Rohit, too, has continued playing ODI cricket and performing at the highest level.
But more than anything else, their bats have answered the questions raised around them.
Rohit Sharma’s Numbers Are a Massive Answer
Since Agarkar’s statement, Rohit Sharma has played 18 ODI matches and scored 950 runs at an average of 59.5.
In fact, no batter has scored more ODI runs than Rohit during this period. Scoring 950 runs at an average of almost 60 is a remarkable response from a player whose commitment towards the 2027 World Cup had been questioned.
If this is what a supposedly “non-committal” Rohit Sharma looks like, it is difficult to imagine what more could have been expected from him.
Rohit did not need a war of words. His performances have done the talking.
Virat Kohli Has Been Even More Destructive
Virat Kohli’s response has been even more emphatic.
Since Agarkar’s statement, Kohli has played 15 ODI matches and scored 928 runs at a stunning average of 77.33. What makes those numbers even more impressive is the way he has scored them. His strike rate during this period has been above 110.
Kohli has therefore combined extraordinary consistency with an increasingly attacking approach.
His recent performances underline that perfectly. Against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, Kohli smashed an unbeaten 139 from just 88 balls while chasing 296. During the same innings, he also became the fastest batter to complete 15,000 ODI runs.
And his intentions regarding 2027 are no longer unclear either. Kohli has publicly confirmed that it will be his final World Cup for India and that he wants to give everything he has to try to win the trophy.
Rohit and Kohli Have Answered Agarkar With Their Bats
That is what makes Agarkar’s statement from exactly one year ago look so striking today.
Rohit has scored 950 runs at an average of 59.5 since then. Kohli has smashed 928 runs at an average of 77.33 while maintaining a strike rate above 110.
These are not the numbers of two players who look short of motivation.
There was huge anger among Rohit and Kohli fans when Agarkar’s comments emerged. One year later, those fans have an even stronger reason to question that statement because both veterans have continued producing runs at an exceptional rate.
Agarkar may now look back at that statement and wonder why he made it in the first place.
Because whatever questions were raised a year ago, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have spent the following 12 months giving their answer in the best possible way — by scoring runs and showing that their hunger for ODI cricket is still very much alive.
