Pakistan cricket has once again found itself at the centre of an embarrassing controversy, this time even in Legends cricket. Over the years, Pakistan cricket has faced several controversies, including serious episodes involving spot-fixing and ball-tampering. The current World Championship of Legends situation is obviously very different from those offences, but once again a team carrying Pakistan’s name is being discussed for reasons other than cricket.
Pakistan Champions failed to take the field for their scheduled World Championship of Legends 2026 match against Bangladesh Champions. Instead of fans talking about Shahid Afridi’s sixes, Mohammad Hafeez’s batting or Mohammad Amir’s bowling, the biggest question became: Where were the Pakistan Champions?
The match was scheduled for October 3 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Fans had arrived expecting to watch some of Pakistan’s biggest former stars in action, but the contest never took place. The fixture was eventually postponed, with the official reason given as “technical reasons.”
Shahid Afridi and Pakistan’s Biggest Names Were Expected
Pakistan Champions were not supposed to be an ordinary Legends side. The squad included some of the most popular Pakistani cricketers of recent years.
Shahid Afridi was the biggest attraction and was associated with the team as captain. Other well-known names in the squad included Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, Sharjeel Khan, Asif Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed.
These are players fans have followed for years. For many supporters, Legends cricket is about getting another opportunity to watch the cricketers they grew up supporting.
That is exactly why what happened on match day was so disappointing.
Reports suggested that Afridi had not even reached the UAE and was still in Pakistan. He had also been absent from the WCL captains’ photoshoot. There was uncertainty around the whereabouts and participation of other Pakistan players as well.
Fans Arrived, But Pakistan Champions Did Not Play
This is where the situation becomes particularly frustrating for supporters.
Fans buy tickets for Legends tournaments because they want to relive old memories. Someone who grew up watching Shahid Afridi wants to see him walk onto a cricket ground again. The same applies to supporters of Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Amir and the other former Pakistan stars.
People had already gathered for the scheduled Pakistan Champions-Bangladesh Champions match, only to see the fixture postponed.
For those supporters, this was not simply another cancelled or postponed cricket match. They had paid for tickets and arrived expecting to watch their childhood heroes in action.
Legends cricket survives largely because of that nostalgia and emotional connection. When a team’s participation remains uncertain even as its scheduled match arrives, it damages that experience.
NOC Issue Adds to the Confusion
Reports also raised questions over whether the Pakistan Cricket Board had issued the required No-Objection Certificates to the players.
However, the NOC situation had not been publicly confirmed by the tournament organisers at the time of the postponement.
That makes the entire episode even more confusing. If there were unresolved issues surrounding Pakistan’s participation, they ideally needed to be settled before supporters arrived at the stadium expecting to watch the team.
The World Championship of Legends had promoted Pakistan Champions as one of its participating teams, with Afridi among the major stars associated with the tournament.
Yet when it was finally time for Pakistan Champions to begin their campaign, the match did not happen.
That is the biggest disappointment in this entire episode. Legends cricket is supposed to celebrate players who gave supporters unforgettable memories during their international careers. Fans come to these tournaments with respect and nostalgia for those names.
On this occasion, supporters who arrived hoping to relive those memories were instead left with questions and disappointment.
