CFB Week 5 winners, losers: Jeremiah Smith dominates, SEC teams humbled

Week 5 of the college football season is officially behind us.

From a pair of humbling SEC results, another record-setting day for wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and more, we run down the most notable happenings of the weekend in our latest installment of winners and losers.

Associated Press No. 4 Miami (5-0, 3-0) continues to take care of business as it looks to improve upon last season’s national runner-up finish. The Hurricanes dominated Clemson (3-2, 2-1 in ACC), 34-13, behind an imposing ground game. They rushed for 192 yards on 35 carries while holding the Tigers to 27 yards on 29 attempts.

Quarterback Darian Mensah continued a Heisman-esque start to the season (although after going 18-of-27, he finally has more incompletions than touchdowns), and the defense wreaked havoc, finishing with two turnovers and six sacks (nine tackles for loss). It was another clinical win for Miami, which has arguably been the country’s most complete team through five weeks.

The five-star No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class has yet to come close to reaching his potential at Michigan (3-2, 0-2 in Big Ten). And after Saturday, it’s time to question if he ever will.

Underwood flopped in a 20-14 road loss at Minnesota (4-1, 2-0 in Big Ten), finishing 10-of-21 for 101 yards and two interceptions. For the fourth time this season, Michigan failed to reach 20 points as Underwood failed to effectively lead the offense.

CBS Sports college football analyst and former Washington coach Rick Neuheisel offered tough advice afterward, saying, “Kyle Whittingham and the Michigan Wolverines need to move away from Bryce Underwood… Just let him learn a little bit from the sideline.”
