Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians has taken another major turn ahead of IPL 2027. While there is still no official confirmation of his departure, trade discussions around the star all-rounder have gathered momentum. Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have all emerged in discussions around a possible move, but KKR now appear to be making the strongest push.
As per reports available to CricInformer, KKR team management has decided to go all out for Hardik Pandya and is prepared to meet Mumbai Indians’ demands to get the trade completed. The latest indications suggest there could be around a 90% chance of Pandya moving to Kolkata if MI agree to the deal and there is no late complication.
The trade is not completed yet and the final decision still depends on Mumbai Indians. However, KKR’s growing interest has put them in a strong position in the race for Pandya.
Why KKR Want Hardik Pandya
There is a clear cricketing reason behind KKR’s aggressive approach. They need a powerful Indian batter in the middle order who can attack spin while also taking responsibility when the situation demands it.
Pandya has already performed that role successfully with Gujarat Titans. Instead of being used only as a lower-order finisher, he moved up the batting order and regularly operated in the middle order. He scored 487 runs in IPL 2022 and another 346 runs in IPL 2023.
His Gujarat Titans stint showed that he could control the middle overs, take on spin, build an innings when required and then accelerate. At KKR, he could perform a similar role while still providing finishing power.
Batting, Bowling and Captaincy Make Hardik a Complete Package
Hardik’s value goes beyond his batting. When fully fit to bowl, he can provide four overs of pace bowling, giving KKR another valuable option in their combination.
His leadership could be equally important. Hardik captained Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022 and took them to another final in 2023.
Therefore, KKR would not simply be trading for a middle-order batter. They would be getting an Indian all-rounder who can bat in different situations, bowl important overs and potentially lead the side.
KKR Could Give Hardik the Freedom He Had at Gujarat Titans
Pandya’s second spell at Mumbai Indians has been very different from his time at Gujarat Titans. Mumbai already had several established Indian leaders and senior figures in their setup, including former captain Rohit Sharma, India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, who himself has leadership experience.
With so many strong leadership voices in the same dressing room, differences reportedly emerged within the group, and Hardik was not always able to captain with the same freedom he enjoyed at Gujarat Titans.
The situation could be different at KKR. Kolkata do not have the same concentration of senior Indian leadership figures, which could allow Hardik to become the clear leader and take tactical decisions with greater freedom.
This would be much closer to the environment he had at Gujarat Titans, where he had greater authority over the team and its on-field decisions.
Abhishek Sharma Also Enters the Discussion
Another interesting name entering KKR’s discussions is Abhishek Sharma. According to the latest information, KKR are also exploring possibilities around the explosive Indian batter.
However, Hardik currently remains a major priority because of the balance he could bring to the squad through his middle-order batting, pace bowling and leadership.
The coming weeks should bring more clarity, with franchises required to make key squad decisions ahead of the November 15 retention deadline.
For now, nothing is official. But according to the latest information available to CricInformer, KKR are making a serious push for Hardik Pandya, and unless negotiations hit a major hurdle, Kolkata could emerge as his next IPL destination.
