Mary Fowler’s withdrawal from the Matildas squad is reported to have left senior figures “unimpressed”, amid rumours she is visiting Nathan Cleary.
Football Australia announced their squad to face Haiti and Germany this week, revealing Fowler was omitted due to “personal circumstances”.
Her teammates are reportedly unaware of the reason behind the withdrawal, with staff also surprised by the development.
The FA have not disclosed any details but senior officials are said to be unimpressed, according toThe Sydney Morning Herald, since they only learned of the situation from Monday’s statement.
Fowler’s teammates have also been caught by surprise, though Matildas winger Hayley Ruso was understanding of the situation.
“I haven’t spoken to Mary. I only just found out the news myself,” she said.
“Obviously, Mary’s a really valuable player for our team, so it’s sad that she’s not here at this camp, but obviously, she has to take care of some personal circumstances.
“There’s not that many camps or matches before the World Cup, so every one is so important. Having a game against a top side like Germany is really important.”
Fowler’s withdrawal sparked speculation she was returning to Australia to support boyfriend Cleary.
Western Weekender reporter Nathan Taylor reports the striker is back in Sydney, and at home with the stricken Penrith star.
Cleary is recovering from a double surgery after sustaining an injury to his left ankle and his right foot.
The Dally M Medal winner is set to be out for several months, and was seen wheelchair bound following his operations.
Cleary thanked Fowler for the support she has shown him as he collected his medal last week.
The couple have been in a relationship since 2023, with Fowler seen cheering on Cleary at State of Origin this year.
