“Rohit Sharma should have been the ODI captain” – Former India cricketer’s bold statement amid IND vs WI 2026 series

Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer recently stated that Rohit Sharma should have continued as India’s ODI captain. Shubman Gill took over the captaincy reins from the senior player in October 2025.

However, Jaffer opined that the team management should have persisted with Sharma till the 2027 ODI World Cup. He suggested that Gill could have been appointed as the new skipper following the showpiece event.

The cricketer-turned-coach said in his recent YouTube video:

“Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of Mumbai Indians. I won’t say the decision was completely wrong, as Shubman Gill has done well, but when you have someone like Rohit Sharma available, he should be the captain. You can always pass the baton to Shubman Gill after the 50-over World Cup.”

Sharma looked in wonderful form during India’s recently concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies. He was dismissed for 32 in the opening clash, but bounced back with scores of 101 and 92 in the remaining fixtures.

“He didn’t get a hundred” – Sunil Gavaskar disappointed with Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in IND vs WI 2026 3rd ODI

Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was unhappy with Rohit Sharma losing his wicket for 92 in the third ODI against West Indies. He stated that he wanted to see more hundreds in the ace batter’s name at this stage of his career.

    Gavaskar said (via NDTV):

“The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is that he didn’t get a hundred, and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. And at that particular point in time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age.”

Sharma bailed India out of trouble after the side lost the in-form Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in the third over. Batting for the first time in the series, KL Rahul played a spectacular knock. He remained unbeaten on 129 off 87 balls, recording his career-best ODI score.

However, West Indies skipper Shai Hope overshadowed Rahul’s ton with his 162* off 143 balls. The visitors chased 352 with five wickets in hand to claim a consolation win.
