Brenden Aaronson transfer: USMNT star headed for Union Berlin?

Leeds United‘s relegation from the Premier League has triggered an exodus from the first team, as the team’s most talented and well-compensated players seek new clubs. Leeds‘ American contingent is no exception, as Weston McKennie has returned to parent club Juventus and Brenden Aaronson is set for a new adventure — in the Bundesliga.

Aaronson had a relegation release clause in his Leeds contract, but it appears the club is in position to accept a loan offer from Union Berlin for the 22-year-old midfielder — who will become the latest American tempted by a move to Germany.

Aaronson to stay contracted to Leeds

Perhaps the most significant element of this deal is that Aaronson will officially remain a Leeds player — which could indicate the club is expecting a quick return to the Premier League in 2024, and further, it still believes Aaronson is a key part of the future at Elland Road.

The Athletic reported that “several” English and German clubs expressed an interest in acquiring Aaronson, a United States international with 29 appearances for the national team. But Union Berlin — which has fellow USMNT regular Jordan Pefok on its roster — appears to have won the race, perhaps by offering soccer at an elite level.

Aaronson lands on his feet…in the Champions League

Aaronson‘s interest in joining Union will no doubt have been bolstered by the club’s presence in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Union were shock title contenders last season, and even led the Bundesliga for a short period while competing in the UEFA Europa League. But by virtue of an eventual fourth-place finish, the capital club will be playing in Europe’s top competition for the first time ever next season — meaning Aaronson will get a chance to demonstrate his abilities on an international stage.
