Jimmy Johnson slams Jerry Jones' comments on Eagles bid to win it all this year

After the Dallas Cowboys lost the divisional game to the San Francisco 49ers, owner Jerry Jones commented that Dallas is betting on the long term, rather than playing all its cards to win the Super Bowl in one year, as the Los Angeles Rams did last season.

And he added that that same strategy is being used by the Cowboys’ bitter division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, who face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday.

“Anybody who thinks I’m not going to take a chance has misread the tea leaves. But I’m thinking long term,” Jones said.

“And I’m very hesitant to bet it all for one year. A lot can happen that year. Essentially, we’re seeing a couple of teams that have had some success betting it all and paying for it later, in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.”

Johnson doesn’t know what his former friend is referring to

The decades-old feud between Johnson and Jones is well known. The two were friends, Jones hired him as Dallas coach and he made them champions. But after winning the second Super Bowl against the Bills in the early 90’s, the friendship was broken, Jimmy left Dallas and the relationship between the two is not cordial.

Johnson recently told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie spoke to him to ask what Jones meant by those comments, to which he replied, “I have no idea.”

“Philadelphia has a couple of first-round picks in the 2023 draft. They have additional picks down the road. They have some very talented players. They have some talented young players,” Johnson said.

“So I don’t know what Jones is referring to. What I do know and believe is that the Philadelphia Eagles are going to be good for a long time,” he added.
