Danny Rohl will have a major say in Rangers’ summer transfer business, with the manager pushing the 49ers to sign Nasser Djiga on a permanent basis and former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Shea Charles.
Southampton’s Charles was recently the hero for Tonda Eckert’s side in the FA Cup, scoring a late winner in the 2-1 victory against Premier League leaders Arsenal.
A fresh report has now dropped an update on the Gers’ chances of signing the former Rohl student, who put himself in the shop window with his performance against the Gunners.
Rohl keen to sign midfielder amid Scottish Premiership title race
After such a disastrous start under Russell Martin, Rohl has done a stellar job getting the Light Blues back in contention for the title, but he is eager to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited in the summer transfer window.
That is according to a report from The Daily Mail, which reveals Rohl is eager to bring Southampton midfielder Charles to Ibrox this summer, but Rangers don’t stand much chance of getting a deal done, as the midfielder is valued at £20m by his current employers.
After setting the pace for the majority of the season, Hearts are starting to show a few signs of vulnerability in the Scottish Premiership title race, collecting just four points from their last three games, and most recently coming up short in a 2-2 draw against struggling Livingston.
On the contrary, it is full steam ahead for the Gers, who have taken nine points from their last three matches, closing the gap to Derek McInnes’ side to just one point, with just one game remaining before the split.
Rohl tips Charles to have “great career”
Saints’ price tag will be a tough one to take for Rohhl, given how highly he has spoken of the former Wednesday loanee, saying last season: “I’ve seen some really good players at a high level, and what I see at his age – how he’s developed, his open-mindedness and character, his game understanding and intelligence… I’m convinced that he will have a great career in a top division. Lets see… I just have to say again, he’s an outstanding player who gives us something special.”
The Northern Irishman is still only 22-years-old, and he has been one of Southampton’s stand-out performers in the English Championship this season, with an average of 2.3 tackles per 90 ranking him second in the squad.
However, having been priced out, it appears as though Rangers may have to move on to alternative targets, of which there is no shortage, with Ibrox officials recently opening talks to sign a potential upgrade on Ryan Naderi.
