Tragedy struck at the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas over the weekend with the unexpected death of one of its participants, Brazilian triathlete and influencer Mara Flavia Araujo, at just 38 years of age.
Mystery surrounds the incident, which occurred in the waters of Lake Woodlands. During the swimming segment, Araujo disappeared and rescue teams were unable to save his life. Divers found his body hours later, according to the event’s organizers.
“We are saddened to confirm the death of a participant in the race during the swimming portion of today’s Ironman Texas triathlon. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends and offer our support at this difficult time. Thanks to the emergency services for their quick intervention,” the organization said
Mara Flavia Araujo looked radiant before the race, in the last message she shared on her Instagram account. “Another day at work,” she wrote. No one could anticipate the tragedy that was about to happen to Araujo, a versatile woman who had worked as a radio announcer, DJ and influencer. A health problem led her to try her luck in triathlon, a sport that after becoming her salvation ended up causing her death.

The autopsy of the Brazilian triathlete’s body will try to determine the causes of the incident. It is speculated that she may have had some health problem during the race that could have caused a fatal fainting spell. Close friends such as Luis Taveira pointed to this hypothesis.
“She was sick before the trip, she was not feeling well. My wife and I talked to her to tell her that she was too weak for this race, although a couple of days ago, when we talked to her, she insisted that she was fine. She was weakened by the flu, but she was still training hard. I still can’t believe what happened,” he said
