Coventry City believe they can win the race for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, despite rival interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Coventry eyeing summer transfer targets after sealing promotion
Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, which means their only remaining target is to make sure they win the Championship title, and they are in a very strong position to do exactly that.
Should the Sky Blues take all three points at home against Portsmouth on Tuesday night, they will go up as champions, with Frank Lampard’s side ten points clear of second-place Ipswich Town, who have four games left to play.
Football Insider’s transfer correspondent, Pete O’Rourke, has made it clear the board are planning to back Lampard in the transfer window, and he isn’t expecting the Englishman to leave.
“I would be very surprised if Lampard was to leave Coventry now. He’s lead them back to the Premier League. I believe Coventry will back Lampard in the transfer market this summer and give him funds to improve the squad.
“They will need to if they are to make an impact in the Premier League. Coventry are quite hopeful and quite relaxed that Lampard will want to continue with them in the Premier League and is still a big part of their project.”
Doug King clearly has big plans for the summer window, with a report from Sports Boom revealing Coventry now believe they can win the race for Chelsea defender Acheampong, even though Bayern Munich remain interested in the 19-year-old.
The teenager, who earns £5k-a-week, is still in the infancy of his career, and he is yet to establish himself as a first-team regular for the Blues, making 14 appearances in the Premier League this season.
The Sky Blues believe they could tempt the Premier League side into sanctioning a loan deal, and he could be a solid addition to Lampard’s backline, having been lauded as “incredible” by journalist Nizaar Kinsella after impressing against Liverpool’s Alexander Isak in October.
Statman Dave also lauded the youngster for his performance against Nottingham Forest, with Coventry perhaps in need of players who are proven in the top flight if they are going to avoid relegation next season.
Frank Lampard planning to raid Chelsea
Acheampong is not the only Chelsea player Coventry have set their sights on, with it being revealed Lampard is keen on signing fellow youngster Jesse Derry.
There have also been suggestions Chelsea could re-hire their former manager in the summer, and if a return to Stamford Bridge transpires, the Sky Blues could bring in a Championship boss.
