Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh predicted that Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson will have a better NFL career than Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
Simpson, on the other hand, was the 13th overall selection. However, Houshmandzadeh believes the former Alabama quarterback is likely to have a more successful career than Mendoza. The former NFL receiver stated this while speaking on the Speakeasy Talk Show on Thursday night.
Thanks for the submission!
“About a month and a half, two months ago, that I felt like, I said I would take Ty Simpson over Mendoza,” Houshmandzadeh said. “And because of Ty Simpson being drafted to the Rams, I’m now going to say this: Ty Simpson’s going to have a better career than Mendoza. As long as McVay is his coach, he’s going to have a better career.”

Houshmandzadeh premised his prediction on the ability of the Rams’ head coach, Sean McVay, to bring the best out of Simpson. McVay is regarded as one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the league since his arrival at Los Angeles in 2017.
The Rams became the NFL’s top-scoring team in his first season after ending the previous season as the league’s lowest-scoring team. He has since led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2018, coming back to win it in 2021. He became the Rams’ winningest coach in 2024 and is believed to have a long career ahead of him as the franchise coach.
How does Ty Simpson fit into the Rams’ quarterback situation?
Ty Simpson’s selection by the Rams has raised many eyebrows, as the team was expected to draft an impact player with their first-round pick. Matthew Stafford is expected to return as the starting quarterback after winning the NFL MVP award last season. But Simpson is not an outright replacement nor backup for the 38-year-old.
Stetson Bennett is also in the picture for the Rams quarterback spot, and Simpson will be competing with him, according to McVay.
Simpson is not a stranger to waiting in line for his time. The quarterback waited three seasons before finally earning the Crimson Tide starting role as a redshirt junior. He will benefit from watching a seasoned veteran like Stafford before bearing the responsibility of leading the Rams’ offense.
