Why was Ashley Padilla about to quit comedy before she became successful?

There are moments in comedy where silence weighs more than anything else.

For Ashley Padilla, that point came after nearly a decade of trying to make it in Los Angeles. The work was there, the auditions were there, but the feeling was always the same: nothing ever really took off.

Over the years, economic stability became another problem. What was initially insistence began to feel like wear and tear.

In an interview with Late Night with Seth Meyers in December 2025, she said bluntly that she felt her career “wasn’t working” and that she just wasn’t making money. At that point, the idea of quitting comedy was no longer hypothetical.

For years, Padilla had moved through different spaces in the Los Angeles scene, without yet finding that moment that would change everything.

    But that moment came later

Ashley Padilla is already considered one of the best on Saturday Night Live. Her name began to circulate strongly within the show for something that does not depend on great gestures, but on something much more difficult to master: timing.

His use of silence has become his trademark. The so-called “Padilla pause” transforms moments that seem empty into part of the joke. He doesn’t speed up the scene, he holds it.

The New York Times recently highlighted precisely this: his ability to extend awkward pauses into something absurd, almost hypnotic, where the joke does not depend on what is said, but on what is left in the air.

And so, what was once about to end is now exactly what defines her.

Because in his case, the change was not noisy, it was a change that came at the exact moment.
