He wants to join Rangers: Mikey Moore 2.0 could be on his way to Ibrox

Oh Danny Rohl, you had been doing such a great job at Rangers. You’d fixed the rubble left behind by the disastrous first half of the campaign and put the Ibrox side back into contention to win the Premiership title.

Until Motherwell visited Glasgow on Sunday afternoon, the Gers had not lost a single league match in 2026. They were within touching distance of winning the league and were ahead of their Old Firm rivals too.

Alas, while Rangers are not well and truly out of things just yet, it does feel as though this is going to be another season where it’s not quite to be for the blue side of the city.

They are now four points adrift and simply running out of time to turn things around. Not even Mikey Moore could save them at the weekend. Introduced as a second-half sub, it was perhaps a surprise to see him omitted from the starting XI.

The latest on Mikey Moore’s future at Rangers

Plenty have thrived under the stewardship of Rohl, but Moore has undoubtedly been one of Rangers’ most exciting players of late, certainly in 2026 anyway.

Prior to that defeat to Motherwell, the Spurs loanee had started all but one of the club’s last eight Premiership matches. In that time, he had scored three goals and registered a solitary assist.

Sure, those are not jaw-dropping numbers but he’s still only 18 and finding his feet in the senior game. Overall, this term he has found the net six times. It’s a handy total, particularly when you consider that he started just five games under the ill-fated spell of Russell Martin.

Yet, the odds of him signing permanently over the summer still feel slim, however much supporters would like to see him return. It could well come down to what division Tottenham find themselves in next term.

Suffer relegation and you’d assume that Moore would be a vital asset in the second tier of English football. Stay up and first team chances may not be as forthcoming. Another loan spell at Rangers would be great but a permanent move does seem far-fetched.

Football FanCast sources understand that preliminary talks have been held over a return to Ibrox in the summer but the player himself does not want to leave Spurs. Speaking recently, the 18-year-old said: “I just want to go back to Tottenham and hopefully get myself a place in the team.”

So, the Gers will need a replacement.

Rangers could sign their new Mikey Moore for £5m

Just how much Rangers can spend and indeed who they can sign will likely be dictated by whether they secure Champions League for next season.

Regardless, a move is surely likely to appeal to Hull City’s Joe Gelhardt.

As reported earlier this month by Football Insider, Gelhardt is understood to be ‘keen’ on moving to Rangers with the Glasgow side one of the ‘frontrunners’ to secure a move.

A deal has been rumoured to cost £3m-£5m which would surely be money well spent. After all, this is one of the best players in the second tier of English football and he’s got a similar playstyle to Moore.

Hailed as a “wrecking ball” by the great Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, coinidentally Gelhardt made a first-team breakthrough at a similar age.

While Moore’s Spurs bow came at the age of 16, Gelhardt was also seen appearing for Wigan when he was 16. While it has not quite happened for the Hull forward at the highest level just yet, he is finally coming of age.

Now aged 23, he has scored 14 goals in 38 Championship matches, marking his best return by a country mile in senior football to date.

Interestingly, the two players have a similar build and play style too. There’s something of a hustle and a bustle to the way they play the game and run.

While Gelhardt stands at 5 foot 9, Moore is only a fraction taller at 5 foot 11, meaning neither are the strongest. Yet, both players are direct, aggressive with their running and have excellent close control, manoeuvring the ball between defenders expertly.

This season, they have made a very similar number of dribbles per game. Moore has completed 1.5 while Gelhardt has completed 1.3.

Both heralded as wonderkids when they were of a similar age, the Rangers loanee will hope he can reach the top quicker than his team’s new transfer target, but nonetheless, Gelhardt would be an excellent signing if they are unable to bring Moore back.
