Aston Villa eye ex-Barcelona star as he sets his sights on Premier League move

Aston Villa are preparing for another ambitious summer after ending the season with Europa League success, and early signs suggest Unai Emery is already pushing ahead with plans to strengthen key areas of the squad.

Villa’s Europa League triumph capped another impressive campaign under Emery and secured Champions League football for next season.

The club have continued to grow impressively since the Spaniard’s arrival, and attention has now turned towards building a squad capable of balancing domestic and European demands once again.

Recent reports have suggested Villa are likely to focus heavily on defensive reinforcements during the window, particularly with Financial Fair Play considerations expected to shape their business.

There has also been growing speculation around possible departures, particularly Morgan Rogers, with clubs across Europe monitoring several Villa players after another strong season.

Unai Emery’s European champions have plans in place for the summer.

Villa are believed to be prioritising versatility and value in the market rather than purely chasing marquee signings.

That approach may explain the latest name to emerge.

Aston Villa eye Oscar Mingueza on free transfer from Celta Vigo

According to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Rowe, via their live blog, Aston Villa are eyeing a move for former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza, who is expected to leave Celta Vigo this summer.

The Spain international is about to be available on a free transfer, making him an attractive option for several clubs across Europe, and it is believed that he wants a move to the Premier League.

Mingueza has rebuilt his reputation during his time in La Liga after leaving Barcelona in 2022.

At Celta Vigo, the 27-year-old has developed into a reliable and versatile defender capable of operating at right-back, centre-back or even further forward in wide areas when required.

That flexibility may appeal strongly to Emery.

Villa’s manager has consistently valued players capable of filling multiple roles across defensive systems, particularly given the demands of European football and the squad rotation required across a long season.

Mingueza’s experience at both club and international level could therefore make him a useful addition without requiring a major transfer fee.

The defender originally came through Barcelona’s academy and made over 60 senior appearances for the club before moving to Celta. While he was never viewed as a long-term star at the Camp Nou, his technical quality and tactical intelligence were widely praised during his development years.

Since joining Celta Vigo, Mingueza has matured considerably. He has become one of the club’s more dependable performers and has continued to attract attention because of his consistency in possession and comfort playing out from the back.

For Villa, the financial side of the deal could be just as important as the football aspect.

Even after Europa League success, the club are still expected to work carefully within PSR regulations, with the new Squad Cost Ratio rules not coming to play until the beginning of the 2026/2027 season.

    Aston Villa celebrate

Free transfers and lower-cost opportunities are likely to play a major role in their strategy this summer, especially if they also pursue bigger deals elsewhere in the squad.

Mingueza would fit that model neatly. He brings top-level experience, positional flexibility and European pedigree without the need for a major transfer outlay.

There is still work to do before any agreement is reached, and Villa are not believed to be alone in monitoring his situation, but the interest appears genuine, and the opportunity to work under Emery while competing in Europe again could prove attractive to the player.
