Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has explained how Lionel Messi helped the side when they were struggling in their FIFA World Cup clash against Austria. The reigning champions made it two wins from two to start the tournament after a 2-0 win over the Europeans, but were made to work for their win.
Scaloni spoke to reporters after the game in Dallas, stating that he wad short of words to describe Messi after his performance. He pointed out that the 38-year-old put in the work defensively when the team needed him, and this inspired his teammates to also rise to the occasion.
Thanks for the submission!
“Even when the team was struggling, Leo stole the ball, he was committed. Being committed is for a reason and that’s what he brings. I don’t even know what else to say anymore, nothing is enough. When Leo gets fired up, everyone gets fired up”, he said (via Mundo Albiceleste).
Argentina’s toughest opponent in the group stage, on paper, was always likely to be Austria. Coached by the shrewd Ralf Rangnick, the Europeans have several experienced players in their squad, including David Alaba, Marko Arnautovic, Marcel Sabitzer and more. They proved to be a tough nut to crack for Messi and Co but were eventually undone by Messi’s brilliance.
Lionel Messi scored both goals for his country, one in either half, to help them overcome the challenge of the Austrians. La Albiceleste have already confirmed their passage into the next round and could secure too spot in the group if Jordan fails to defeat Algeria.
Lionel Messi enjoys record-breaking night in FIFA World Cup
Argentina captain Lionel Messi enjoyed a record-breaking night with his country as they defeated Austria 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup. The 38-year-old became the player with the most goals in the history of the competition, surpassing Miroslav Klose‘s tally.
Messi missed a ninth minute penalty in his bid to break the record he held jointly with Klose, striking it wide of the upright. He made up for his miss in the 38th minute by sweeping home from inside the box to break Klose’s record.
Lionel Messi added a second goal in second half stoppage time, taking his FIFA World Cup tally to 18 goals in 28 appearances. By scoring his 18th goal, he surpassed female Brazil legend Marta scored 17 World Cup goals in her career. He has now surpassed every player, male or female, in terms of goals in the World Cup.
