AEW issues a statement after former WWE star passes away at the age of 44

AEW has issued a statement as the wrestling world mourns the loss of an ex-WWE star who d*ed at age 44.

A heartbreaking development has befallen the world of wrestling as ex-WWE star Joe Doering breathed his last today after a long-fought battle with brain cancer. Doering, who briefly competed in the Stamford-based promotion’s developmental territory (FCW) in 2010, was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016. A decade later, in June 2026, Doering entered hospice care after his third brain tumor during that period was deemed resistant to chemotherapy. According to a statement released by Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling on X, Doering passed away peacefully at 9:13 AM, surrounded by family.

Following the news, AEW took to X and issued a statement on the wrestling veteran’s d*ath, expressing their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved’s family.

“AEW and the wrestling world mourn the passing of Joe Doering. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and fans during this difficult time.”

Joe Doering never crossed over into AEW

Many would agree that the late Joe Doering was a prominent name in professional wrestling, known for his stints at All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). Some of his accolades include winning the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship and the Impact World Heavyweight Championship, each on two occasions. His WWE stint in 2010 also saw him compete in multiple Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) matches. Doering was known for his hard-hitting wrestling style, supported by his 6 feet 8 inches, 270-pound build.

Interestingly, Doering never appeared in AEW during his active career. The 44-year-old had stopped wrestling by late 2022 to focus on his health, six years after his brain cancer diagnosis. At that time, Tony Khan’s promotion was just about three years old and still finding its groove. This suggests that Doering’s lack of appearances in the Jacksonville-based promotion may have been due to his loyalty to TNA while managing his health issues. That said, it is safe to say that the veteran’s wrestling style would be a good fit in All Elite Wrestling.

From all of us at Sportskeeda, we extend our deepest condolences to Joe Doering’s family and wish them strength in these difficult times.
