Zimbabwe unveil new ODI captain Richard Ngarava; Sikandar Raza back in squad

Zimbabwe National Cricket Team etched history a few days back as the Chevrons got a massive victory over an in-form Bangladesh side at the Harare Sports Club, Harare, in the one-off Test match. After that, the ODI series is lined up between both nations, as they will face each other in a three-match ODI series starting from Monday, July 6, at Harare Sports Club, Harare.

Ahead of the ODI series, the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team has announced the squad for the upcoming 50-over series against the Bangla Tigers. Richard Ngarava leads the hosts for the first time in ODIs, ushering in a new era of Zimbabwean cricket, with experienced campaigners Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza backing him up.

Richard Ngarava named as ODI captain

Richard Ngarava had a stunning start to his captaincy debut during the one-off Test as the Chevrons won the match by an innings and 85 runs, marking their highest-ever win by margin in the traditional format of the game. The experienced speedster will once again look to guide the home side to win the ODI series against a strong Bangladesh side.

Richard Ngarava is expected to lead the pace attack alongside the likes of Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri and Ernest Masuku. The pace trio of Ngarava, Muzarabani and Brad Evans created problems in the T20 World Cup 2026 for big opponents. They will surely create problems with their pace and bounce against Bangladesh.

    Innocent Kaia returns for Zimbabwe

Innocent Kaia, who scored his maiden Test century in Zimbabwe’s innings-and-85-run victory over Bangladesh earlier this week, has been named to the ODI team along with other top-order batters Ben Curran and Brian Bennett. Kaia returns to the side after nearly three years, as he last played a 50-over match against Ireland in 2023.

Brian Bennett has been the best batter for the side in recent times; in the 2024/25 season, he scored over 350 runs with an average of over 35. The 22-year-old batter was crucial in a successful T20 World Cup for the hosts and will look to contribute the same in the ODI format as well.

Zimbabwe have a good spin bowling depth

The squad’s spin bowling resources include all-rounders Ryan Burl and Wessly Madhevere, as well as left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza. The selectors have decided to keep Tadiwanashe Marumani and Clive Madande as wicketkeepers.

They last played one-day international cricket in August of last year, hosting Sri Lanka for a two-match series at Harare Sports Club in which the Island nation completely outplayed the Chevrons.
