The Michigan Wolverines did not wait long to make a decision on their new permanent head coach.
The Wolverines announced Friday that they are removing the interim tag from head basketball coach Mike Boynton. He is signing a two-year contract to replace Dusty May as the school’s permanent coach.
Michigan’s announcement included a statement from May, who praised Boynton and said you “couldn’t ask for a better person to lead Michigan basketball.”
Boynton was very quickly handed the interim title after May left to coach the Dallas Mavericks last month. He was a part of May’s staff last season as a top assistant and was credited with coaching defense, which the Wolverines excelled at as they won the national championship last season.
Boynton also has previous head coaching experience, having previously coached Oklahoma State, where he went 119-109 over seven seasons.
It is something of a surprise that Michigan would move this quickly to give Boynton the permanent job, but the agreement gives both parties a bit of added security. It likely helps that Boynton has proven himself capable of minimizing roster turnover, as he has been able to keep the core of players together despite May’s exit.
