Team India might be facing a massive coaching staff reset after their embarrassing tour of Ireland and England, with multiple members set for an exit soon. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are set to hold a review meeting after the three-match ODI series, but so far, the purpose of the congregation is viewed as purely assessment-based instead of major decisions.
According to a report by the Times of India, one member of the coaching staff is set to part ways with the team soon, while another member could also follow him on the way out. It remains to be seen whether the departures are because of the team’s recent performances, or simply a desire to move on to new opportunities.
The report further states that atleast one of the two coaching staff members in questions is eyeing a switch to one of the franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), ahead of the 2027 season.
“It is understood that the support staff had signed a 2+1 contract with the BCCI. While the cricket board and the coaches have the option of extending their tenure by one year after the initial two-years, it is understood that at least one coach has already held discussions with an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise with a global presence and is likely to join their setup,” the report states.
Amid rumored friction between the coaching staff and the selectors, reportedly dating back to the 0-2 home Test series loss against South Africa, the prospect of the members opting to move on was always in the works, behind the scenes.
“This possible move is not due to the team’s poor outings in Ireland and England, but rather something that has been brewing over the past few months. It is learnt that cracks have deepened in the dressing room since the two-Test defeat against South Africa at home, and it is not the happiest place to be at the moment. The disagreements between the selectors and the coaching staff have further complicated matters,” the report further mentions.
The current coaching setup will face a major review at the hands of the BCCI before the Sri Lanka tour in August. Meanwhile, a second-string coaching staff, led by VVS Laxman, is set to take charge of the team for the T20I series against Zimbabwe later this month, and also the Asian Games 2026 in September-October.
How does Team India’s current coaching setup look like?
The Men in Blue had last faced a major coaching reset after head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, all left after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Fielding coach T Dilip retained his position in the new head coach Gautam Gambhir’s setup.
The former Indian opener vouched hard for his former colleagues Ryan ten Doeschate, Abhishek Nayar, and Morne Morkel, to be part of his coaching team. Abhishek Nayar was relieved of his roles in April 2025, as Sitanshu Kotak joined the side as the batting coach. Recently, Sairaj Bahutule was also appointed as the spin bowling coach.
