Arsenal have spent much of the summer trying to identify the midfielder who will shape the next phase of Mikel Arteta‘s project.
The Gunners have cast a wide net, weighing up established stars capable of making an immediate impact alongside some of Europe’s brightest young talents.
For several weeks, Moroccan World Cup sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi appeared to fall firmly into the second category at N5.
Arsenal were said to have invested significant time in the Lille teenager, reportedly holding discussions with his representatives and making it clear they viewed him as one of the continent’s outstanding prospects.

Man City overtake Arsenal in race to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi
According to Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Man City have moved into pole position to sign Bouaddi after accelerating negotiations with both the player and Lille.
His report claims discussions are progressing rapidly, with City taking advantage after Arsenal shifted their focus towards Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães.
Andrea Berta’s switch in priorities has apparently allowed Enzo Maresca’s side to leapfrog the Gunners as Bouaddi’s future looks increasingly destined to be at the Etihad.
City’s interest has intensified following Bouaddi’s impressive World Cup campaign.
TalkSPORT recently reported that the Premier League side have become increasingly confident of completing a deal, with Lille prepared to discuss a sale but preferring either a premium fee for an immediate transfer or a reduced price if the player were loaned back for another season.
City, though, are understood to want Bouaddi available immediately as they continue rebuilding their midfield.
Arteta remains a rumoured huge admirer of Bouaddi, but the club’s midfield agenda has evolved as the transfer window has progressed, and strengthening a proven Premier League performer like Guimarães would address an immediate need.
Some reports suggest Arsenal have monitored Bouaddi for around three years and remain convinced he has the attributes to become one of Europe’s leading midfielders.
