Athletics Victoria is excited to release its dates for the 2026-27 AVSL and Championships season, with Specialist and Club Meet dates to follow shortly.
With more than 30 exciting meets scheduled from September through March, we’re looking forward to another unforgettable summer of track and field following the success of the winter XCR Series.
The AV summer track and field season officially kicks off on September 2 with the UNCLOUD Victorian All Schools Track Relay Championships, but our clubs’ eyes will be set on October 17, with the return of AVSL – our staple track and field series. As the cornerstone of the summer calendar, AVSL will see more than 50 clubs compete across five divisions over ten rounds, all vying for the coveted Shield while also battling for promotion and avoiding relegation ahead of the 2027–28 season.
The 2026–27 calendar has been developed following extensive planning to create a more logical and athlete-focused competition season – providing greater consistency for athletes, while strengthening the pathway from school competition through to club and championship participation.
September and early October will focus on school athletics, allowing students to prioritise school competitions before AVSL begins. From October through January, the emphasis shifts to club competition and AVSL, before the season culminates with our major championship period from February onwards.
Several key changes have been introduced for the 2026–27 season, including:
- The UNCLOUD Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships have been moved to the beginning of October. This change provides greater consistency for Athletics Victoria members competing in AVSL throughout the summer while also giving school athletes and their families additional time to plan and organise travel for the Australian All Schools Championships in Perth.
- Ballarat will host the Victorian Country Championships at its brand-new athletics facility, marking an exciting milestone for regional athletics. Following Ballarat’s hosting in 2027, Geelong will welcome the event in 2028 following the completion of their brand-new pavilion, as Athletics Victoria continues to invest in showcasing regional venues as host of the Country Championships.
- For the first time in recent years, all major Track & Field State Championship events—including the Victorian 5000m Championships, Victorian Track Relays, Zatopek:10, Victorian Combined Event Championships, and the Victorian Track & Field Championships—will be held at Lakeside Stadium, reinforcing its role as Victoria’s premier athletics venue and providing athletes with a consistent championship experience.
“We believe this structure creates a stronger competition pathway for everyone involved in our sport. It gives athletes clear goals throughout the summer, allows clubs to maximise participation during AVSL, and ensures our championship events receive the focus they deserve as the pinnacle of the Victorian season,” Athletics Victoria’s Sport Delivery Manager Craig Wallace said of the new competition structure.
Athletics Victoria CEO Matthew Duck shared his excitement for the summer ahead.
“Off the back of another strong winter XCR season, we’re really excited to get the summer season underway.”
“No matter your level, this summer calendar has something for you,” Duck said.
At Athletics Victoria, we are eagerly anticipating another exciting summer season and extending our offerings to our current, new, and past members.
