Even though the Los Angeles Rams are one of the best teams in the NFL and a top Super Bowl contender for 2026, they were thinking long-term at the top of this year’s draft. Instead of taking a player that would help them immediately, they went with quarterback Ty Simpson even though they already had the reigning league MVP, Matthew Stafford, at the position.
The plan is obvious: Allow Simpson to sit and learn for a year or two behind Stafford, and then be ready to take over when he retires and ideally be ready to be inserted right into the lineup to help the Rams stay in contention.
The Rams got their first look at Simpson on Saturday as he played the bulk of the snaps in their 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was a promising debut

Simpson completed 21-of-25 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and zero turnovers during the game, throwing both touchdowns to fellow rookie Dean Connors.
Neither touchdown was a big-time throw, but he did make some tough passes throughout the day to show some of the promise the Rams were looking for when they selected him.
