Current Champion subtly pays tribute to Chris Benoit in blockbuster clash against Rey Mysterio on WWE RAW

Rey Mysterio suffered a defeat in the co-main event of WWE RAW in what was an excellent match. It was very reminiscent of the 2000s, and his opponent, a current Champion, appeared to pay tribute to Chris Benoit.

Chad Gable offered to defend the Intercontinental Championship against WWE Hall of Famer and AAA General Manager, Rey Mysterio. It was his way of making amends for what he perceived as disrespect toward the lucha libre culture. However, it appears as though all has been forgiven, and in many respects, Gable earned more respect from the lucha libre community than a foreigner like himself normally would get. Gable has earned the appreciation of everyone around him in the last few months, and he is doing an incredible job as the reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion.

During his match against Rey Mysterio on the August 17 episode of RAW, Chad Gable hit the flying headbutt, which is a move specifically (but not exclusively) used by the controversial Chris Benoit. In the end, Gable defeated Mysterio to retain his Intercontinental Championship.

Gable has used the Flying Headbutt before, as has El Grande Americano 2.0. Daniel Bryan, also known as Bryan Danielson, also used the flying headbutt. However, this is notably a controversial move, as Chris Benoit performed it regularly. Many believe that it was a huge contributor to the numerous concussions that he suffered, which ultimately led to the tragic end of his family’s life.

Ultimately, Gable doesn’t do it all the time; it seemed to be a special occasion when he broke it out. With that said, the match was quite reminiscent of the Ruthless Aggression Era of SmackDown, which is fondly remembered for the quality of its shows, matches, and roster from top to bottom. This was a great match.
