Ilia Topuria is handling his first career loss well, according to Merab Dvalishvili. During a recent interview, ‘The Machine’ claimed that Topuria was enjoying his life and staying positive as he recovers from the battle scars of his UFC Freedom 250 bout.
For context, Topuria registered the first loss of his MMA career when he was forced to retire on the stool after four grueling rounds against Justin Gaethje at the UFC White House event.
‘El Matador’ suffered brutal orbital fractures during the bout and has since been handed a 180-day suspension.
The Georgian-born Spaniard has kept a relatively low profile during his recovery, aside from sharing a few casual photos with friends and partying with FIFA World Cup winner Ferran Torres.

Now, in a recent interview with Helen Yee, Dvalishvili, a close friend of Topuria, provided a positive update on the former lightweight champion:
“He is very positive. He is enjoying his life. And when he comes back, he will beat everybody. Things happen, you know; we are fighters. But Ilia is very strong mentally and physically. And he’ll come back, like I said, and he’ll get back what is his, his belt.”

Topuria is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation. The 29-year-old has held both the UFC featherweight and lightweight titles.
His back-to-back knockout wins over Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira are regarded by many as among the greatest three-fight runs in mixed martial arts history.
When Ilia Topuria explained how he’d handle a loss
While losing will undoubtedly be a hard pill to swallow for a dominant fighter like Ilia Topuria, it appears ‘El Matador’ has a bulletproof mindset when it comes to handling setbacks.
During a 2024 interview with Daniel Cormier ahead of his featherweight title fight against Alexander Volkanovski, ‘El Matador’ explained that even if things went wrong and he suffered a loss, he would always build himself back up:
“Of course, I can lose… I will win. Of course, I will win. But if something goes differently from the way that I want it to, what is gonna happen? Do you think I’m gonna give up ever in my life? I’m always gonna know, when I look at myself in the mirror, who I am. I’m never gonna lose that trust in myself. That’s everything, you know.”
