Three areas Chelsea need to improve before transfer window closes

The transfer window closes on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for the Premier League, and clubs are desperately trying to make their final moves.

Chelsea got off to a winning start with a 3-2 scoreline against Fulham, but there are still areas to improve under new manager Xabi Alonso. Here are three positions that Chelsea need to improve before transfer deadline day.

    1. Goalkeeper

Chelsea have been relying on Robert Sanchez in goal, but the Spanish keeper has been known for his costly errors. Sanchez’s errors provided Fulham with both of their goals in the opening weekend, and these are far from the only times the keeper has made a mess of things.

Chelsea look to be closing in on signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, but the team could do with signing another keeper to back up the Argentinian.

    2. Central midfielder

The drama with Enzo Fernandez continues, with Manchester City and Enzo Maresca still pursuing the midfielder. Fernandez has been met with boos by the Chelsea fans in his latest appearances for the club, which seem to signify that he is not wanted by Chelsea anymore.

If a deal for Fernandez is agreed, Chelsea will need to fill the void of his departure before the window closes. Chelsea have been linked with several midfielders whom they believe will help to bolster their lines.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott remains highly rated at Stamford Bridge, with the Englishman having plenty of Premier League experience to provide Chelsea’s midfield. Bournemouth remain reluctant to sell Scott, as he has been a reliable player for the club.

Another target for Chelsea, if Fernandez leaves, appears to be Lamine Camara from AS Monaco. Camara will likely have a smaller fee than Scott, which appeals to Chelsea given the money the club has already spent this summer.

    3. Center-back

Chelsea have struggled defensively in recent seasons, which points to the club needing to sign a strong, commanding center-back. Levi Colwill provides good experience for the club, although he has faced several injury spells.

Maxence Lacroix has come into the side from Crystal Palace, which will help the backline, but fellow defender Josh Acheampong has been linked with a potential move away, despite Alonso’s praise for the young defender.

Should Acheampong leave the club, Chelsea will need to find another center-back fast. The club has reportedly reached an agreement for Honest Ahanor, who comes in as a young option for Alonso at center-back.
