New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole is slumping at the wrong time.
On Saturday, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner had another poor start in a 12-2 loss to the New York Mets (69-79).
Cole, making his 20th start of the season, lasted 4.1 innings while giving up five earned runs on nine hits, including three home runs. With the Yankees (85-63) gearing up for the postseason, their one-time ace’s rough stretch complicates manager Aaron Boone’s rotation heading into the playoffs.

Over his last four starts dating back to a 5-1 loss to the Houston Astros on Aug. 27, Cole has a 6.08 earned run average with only 17 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
The Mets got to the six-time All-Star early, with leadoff hitter Francisco Lindor taking an 85 mph changeup 359 feet to right field on the third pitch of the game.
