The next players’ auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to be held in India. For the past few years, players’ auctions for the IPL seasons have been held in overseas venues.
For the IPL 2027 auction, the organisers can consider bringing the event back to India. The last time an IPL players’ auction was organised in India was in 2023. Kochi was then the host city for the auction.
IPL 2027 players’ auction could be held in India after three seasons
On September 16, Cricbuzz, in its latest report, reported on the possibilities of a returning IPL auction in India. After the 2023 auction in Kochi, the subsequent three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
The upcoming auction, which will be a mini auction, is likely to be held in India, according to the latest media report, and the even again could head outside India for the 2028 players’ auction, which will be a mega auction.
The decision to bring back the IPL players’ auction in India was taken during the IPL Governing Council meeting held on Tuesday (September 15). According to the report, the franchises raised their doubts about sending their delegates to any overseas venues for a mini auction due to logistical and operational challenges.
Selection of hotel will ba another challange for the IPL organisers
The previous season’s auction, which was also a mini auction held overseas, might be the reason the franchises faced some challenges, which were noted by the organisers nd then discussed the matters during the meeting, and a decision was taken according to that. However, a public announcement is yet to come about the selection of the venue for the players’ auction ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
The auction is likely to be arranged between October and December, which is the wedding season in India. So the board will have to select the venue, keeping the occasion in mind, if they want to hold it in India.
Cricbuzz further reported that the selection of the venue will be dependent on the availability of rooms in a five-star hotel. For a couple of days, the organisers may have to book more than 100 rooms for the entire players’ auction process. Availability of over a hundred rooms in a five-star hotel during the wedding season can be another hurdle for the Indian cricket board.
Decision to come on the Impact Player rule
Alongside selecting the venue, the Governing Council of the league is required to take a final call on the Impact Player rule. The rule was introduced to provide all of the franchises tactical flexibility during their matches.
As the rule is not aligned with international cricket standards, and many raised their concerns against it, the Council left the rule in uncertainty. Another meeting is likely to be arranged in the future to take a final decision on the Impact Player rule. It is believed that some of the franchises are also not in favour tof carryingthe rule forward.
