For the second consecutive season, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are meeting the American League Wild Card round.
But unlike in 2025, when Boston took Game 1 3-1 at Yankee Stadium before dropping the next two, it was the Bronx Bombers who threw the first punch. The game was closer than the 9-0 final indicated, but there is nothing misleading about Ben Rice’s box score.
The Yankees leading home run hitter in 2026 finished 4-for-5 with a single, double and two more dingers. His first blast came in the fifth inning and gave New York a 2-0 lead immediately after Boston manager Chad Tracy removed starter Peyton Tolle from the game. His second – a grand slam off of Brayan Bello – came three innings later and tied him with four other Yankees for the most RBI in a playoff game (6).
Rice and the Yankees now have two chances to end Boston’s season, but after becoming the first Wild Card team to advance after losing Game 1 to the Red Sox last season, will hope to get it done on the first try.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. With Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton missing the majority of the season, the Massachusetts native carried the Yankees offense through some barren stretches this season.
