Indian cricket fans have received a major and rather unexpected update as Yuzvendra Chahal has announced his retirement with immediate effect. The decision has surprised many of his fans, especially because Chahal remains an active cricketer and has continued to show that his famous leg-spin can trouble quality batters.
Naturally, the announcement has also created one big question among fans: Is Chahal retiring completely? Will he still play in the IPL? The answer brings some relief for those who still want to see the experienced spinner in action.
Yuzvendra Chahal Retires From First-Class Cricket
Chahal has retired only from First-Class cricket, bringing his red-ball career to an end. He has not retired from white-ball cricket and intends to continue playing both One-Day and T20 cricket.
That means fans can still expect to see Chahal playing in competitions such as the IPL. More importantly, Chahal himself has made it clear that his ambition of representing India again is still alive.
In his retirement message, Chahal said that playing Test cricket for India had always been a dream, although he never received a Test cap. He also made his white-ball intentions very clear, writing:
“But I AM NOT DONE YET.”
Chahal added that his hunger to play for India remains alive and that he will give everything he has to earn another opportunity in the ODI and T20 formats.
So, this is not the end of Yuzvendra Chahal’s cricket career. It is only the end of his journey with the red ball.
Yuzvendra Chahal’s First-Class Career
Chahal was always much better known for his white-ball achievements, but his First-Class career had several memorable moments as well.
Current reports following his retirement credit Chahal with 49 First-Class matches and 148 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls, with best innings figures of 6/44.
His final First-Class appearance came for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Lord’s in September 2026. Chahal picked up two wickets in the match, making one of cricket’s most famous grounds the venue for the final red-ball appearance of his career.
Despite never playing Test cricket for India, Chahal continued testing himself in the longer format through domestic cricket and his County Championship spells in England.
Chahal Produced Some Special Performances in County Cricket
One of Chahal’s finest First-Class performances came for Northamptonshire against Derbyshire. He took a five-wicket haul in the first innings before adding 4/54 in the second innings, finishing with 9/99 in the match. His performance helped Northamptonshire register a 133-run victory.
Even near the end of his red-ball career, Chahal was producing impressive performances.
In the 2026 County Championship, he took 21 wickets in just five matches at an average of 16.14 for Northamptonshire. His best innings figures during the season were 5/84 against Durham, and he collected nine wickets across that match.
That Durham match also produced one of the memorable moments of his final season. Chahal bowled England star Ben Stokes with a sharply turning delivery, once again showing what his leg-spin could do even against an experienced international batter.
These performances showed that although Chahal became a household name because of limited-overs cricket, he was still capable of making a major impact with the red ball.
Will Yuzvendra Chahal Continue Playing IPL?
Yes. His retirement announcement concerns First-Class cricket, not T20 cricket.
Therefore, Chahal remains available for the IPL and other white-ball competitions. He has also not closed the door on international cricket. In fact, his retirement statement makes it clear that returning to India’s ODI or T20I side remains one of his targets.
Chahal last played for India in 2023, but his decision to continue with white-ball cricket means his international career has not formally ended.
For him, performances in competitions such as the IPL could therefore become even more important. Strong performances can keep his name in the discussion, although any future India selection will ultimately depend on form, team requirements and the selectors.
End of One Journey, But Chahal Is Not Done Yet
Chahal’s retirement is emotional because it closes the door on a format in which he once dreamed of representing India at Test level.
But for his fans, there is also good news.
Yuzvendra Chahal has not retired from cricket.
The red ball may no longer be in his plans, but the familiar leg-spin, googlies and wicket celebrations can still be seen in white-ball cricket. The IPL remains part of his future, and Chahal himself still believes he has enough cricket left to fight for another opportunity with Team India.
For now, one chapter of his career has ended — but Chahal has made it very clear that his story as a cricketer is not over yet.
