Dan Quinn has skyrocketed on the “list of head coaches on the hot seat after Week 5”.
During overtime of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, the Washington Commanders managed to force a fumble on Cam Skattebo. However, Quinn proceeded to not have Jayden Daniels either spike the ball or throw it out of bounds after entering field goal range, resulting in the team running out of time and ending the game 27-all.
Thanks for the submission!
That blunder drew much condemnation from fans, and Stephen A. Smith concurred with them on Monday’s episode of ESPN’s First Take:
•
“Dan Quinn, it was nice knowing you as the head coach for the Washington Commanders. This will be your last season there. You will not be the head coach of the Washington Commanders next season. … I know an imminent dismissal when I see one.”

Also on Monday, Quinn addressed what exactly transpired on the field:
“We wanted to use some clock after getting into field goal range. There have been four kicks that had been missed in the game. So burning some time is the smart call, as you kick near the end of the game.
“About 56 seconds, we handed off to Rachaad White, and it took entirely too long from there on to execute our strategy — like, it was a breakdown. It can’t happen. … We’ve got a lot of (expletive) to clean up on, and trust me, everyone in this building started with me feels that urgency.”
Former NFL scout also says Commanders should fire HC Dan Quinn after OT blunder vs. Giants
Another prominent NFL figure who called for Dan Quinn’s dismissal was former scout John Middlekauff. During an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s eponymous podcast, he said:
“This isn’t the end of the game, you could have kicked the field goal at 45 seconds. The game’s over, everyone’s touched the ball, this is overtime, leave! Everyone was stagnant on this … Dan Quinn would have had to say something. Any coach from the history of the league would have taken over from the sideline and started screaming at Jayden Daniels.”
Quinn and the Commanders’ next game is on the road against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday next week. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET on ABC/ESPN.
