Socceroos captain Mat Ryan has issued a public apology after Australia was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup following the Round of 32 loss to Egypt in Dallas on Saturday morning AEST.
The veteran goalkeeper was substituted into the match moments before the end of extra time, replacing Patrick Beach moments before the penalty shootout.
However, Tony Popovic’s gamble backfired when Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their spot kicks, with Ryan failing to get a hand on any of Egypt’s four attempts.

Socceroos lose to Egypt on penalties | 12:01
Speaking to reporters after the match, Beach confessed the decision took him by surprise, revealing the goalkeeper switch wasn’t a preconceived plan. He only found out he was coming off when his number appeared on the big screen
“I found out at the same time you guys did,” Beach said.
“There’s obviously a plan that was put in place, and it wasn’t for us to know about. Our job is just to focus on the game and what’s happening in the moment.
“The coaches made a decision. And, as far as it goes, Maty and I had to do the job; whatever works best for the team and brings the best outcome for our team.”
He added: “Of course I’d have loved to have been in the penalty shootout, but that’s the decision the boss made, I respect him and respect that decision.”
Meanwhile, Ryan explained that he been only been informed of the looming switch during half-time of extra-time, barring if the Socceroos were out of substitutions.
Many pundits also pointed out that goalkeeper Paul Izzo, considered a penalty shootout specialist following his heroics for Melbourne Victory during the 2024 A-League finals, went unused on the bench.
On Sunday, the 34-year-old shared a heartfelt message on social media, declaring that he had “dreamt of that moment my whole life”.
“Never have wanted anything more than to have been able to produce and come through for the team and nation in a moment like that,” he wrote.
“Unfortunately I fell short and am sorry the dream has come to an end as a result. Hurting is an understatement, but I’ll live with it and take the lessons and use them for whatever else life throws at me down the track.”
Australia, having progressed out of the group stage for just the third time, are yet to win a World Cup knockout match.
“Incredibly proud of the team and my teammates for their performances throughout and once again captivating the nation and creating some memories we’ll all never forget,” Ryan continued.
“To the staff for their commitment to providing the players with all they need to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities.
“Lastly, to the supporters who are always the ones who make the experiences as special as they are through the ways in which they go about supporting the team. The atmospheres in the stadiums, the footage back home of the live sites and everything in between, making all the triumphant memories all the more special, thank you.
“Proud Aussie.”
