Sophia Wilson scored the final goal in the Portland Thorns’ 4-0 beatdown of Racing Louisville FC on Sunday. It was Wilson’s 50th career NWSL regular season goal. She is the ninth player to hit the 50-goal mark and the fastest in terms of games played. Sunday was Wilson’s 89th regular season game. She now joins Sam Kerr and Lynn Biyendolo as the only players to score 50 NWSL goals before playing 100 games.
Kerr and Biyendolo are the league’s top scorers, with 77 and 70 goals, respectively. Kerr’s last NWSL goal was in 2019, but she recently returned to NWSL with NJ/NY Gotham FC and will soon have an opportunity to build on that number. Biyendolo is currently on maternity leave with the Seattle Reign.
Wilson was the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft (as Sophia Smith) but this is just her fifth regular season. Her rookie season was wiped out due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She missed all of 2025 on maternity leave. In 2022, Wilson became the first and heretofore only player to be named MVP of the regular season and NWSL Championship. A year later, she won the Golden Boot as the league’s top goal scorer.
Sunday’s goal was Wilson’s sixth of the season. The win lifted the Thorns into second place, one point off league-leading San Diego.
