Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with the entourage of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo over his potential transfer to the club this summer, according to The Athletic.
Long before his January 2023 move to Liverpool ever materialised, Gakpo had already carved out an excellent reputation at PSV Eindhoven, picking up an Eredivisie title along with two Dutch Cups and two Dutch Super Cups during his time there.
Since making the move to Anfield, he’s remained a mainstay of the Reds’ attack, none more so than during the 2024/25 title-winning campaign, when he contributed an excellent 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions.
However, Gakpo found it harder to reproduce those numbers last season. While some of his performances were underwhelming and he was guilty of some costly misses, he still finished the campaign with 15 goal contributions.
Nevertheless, he showed that his quality at the highest level remains intact at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, where he was involved in four goals in four appearances.
Now, as per The Athletic, Tottenham have made contact with Gakpo’s entourage over his potential transfer to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
‘Genuine interest’
While the North Londoners have expressed their desire to sign the Dutchman to his camp, the club are yet to formally open talks with Liverpool to discuss his transfer, according to the report.
In a separate report on the BBC, football reporter Aadam Patel, while responding to transfer-related questions, confirmed that Tottenham thus hold a ‘genuine interest’ in Gakpo, but a move hinges on Spurs’ ability to meet Liverpool’s valuation.
He said, ‘We reported in June that a number of clubs, including Spurs, were monitoring Cody Gakpo’s situation at Liverpool.’
The interest is certainly genuine for a player who has proven it in the Premier League, but the reality is that unless Liverpool bring in more players and Tottenham were to make an offer in excess of £60m, Gakpo stays put.’
He also revealed that a move to North London seems improbable at this time unless the Reds successfully recruit Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.
‘Right now, a move to Spurs looks unlikely, but if Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Bradley Barcola, who primarily operates down the left flank, then this will be one to keep an eye on,’ Patel added.
Roberto De Zerbi will hope to begin his first full campaign as Tottenham boss on a high when his side travels to the Gtech Community Stadium to face London rivals Brentford on Saturday, 22nd August.
