From the collegiate level to playing overseas, Jenna Nighswonger has demonstrated phenomenal skill. Her versatility and energy gives her squad a useful edge. Even at her young age, she has already experienced playing the game at multiple levels. Let’s dive into Nighswonger’s career so far and what could be in store for her.
Florida State Seminoles
Joining the elite soccer program at Florida State in 2019 was truly the beginning of it all for Nighswonger. Through her collegiate career, she played in 86 matches. Within those matches, she recorded 34 assists and 19 goals as a midfielder.
One of the greatest memories from her time as a Seminole was lifting the 2021 NCAA National Championship. Aside from this, she also was listed as one of the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy finalists.
It is safe to say that Nighswonger entered the program with a lot of skill and dynamic talent. Yet, the program surely helped her develop into a stronger player, which was crucial as she entered the professional phase of her soccer career.
NWSL: NJ/NY Gotham FC
Despite only having a two-year stint with Gotham, it was surely an unforgettable one. Nighswonger was drafted at #4 in the 2023 NWSL Draft. High expectations for a high profile club were definitely in play during this season, especially after drafting Nighswonger.
Such expectations were met when Gotham successfully secured the 2023 NWSL Championship. Nighswonger made a key switch in her position this season where she shifted from the midfield to a fullback role. This was definitely a successful transition, and Nighswonger’s skill, versatility, and determination are what granted her the NWSL Rookie of the Year.
USWNT
Late 2023 was an exciting moment where Nighswonger made her senior debut for the USWNT. From there on, Nighswonger proved to be a highly-skilled player who was able to remain composed in high-pressure moments. She made a crucial penalty kick during the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup and became the youngest USWNT player to do so since 2003.
In her electric and significant play for the USWNT, she participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and helped the squad secure the Gold Medal. Regardless of her youthful age, her role on the team had a massive impact from the moment she debuted at the 2024 Olympics.
Despite all of this, Nighswonger has not made an appearance for the USWNT since early last year. It is possible it is due to the loads of talent the USWNT program is currently assessing and monitoring. Nighswonger has also spent a few years post-Gotham in Europe, so this is another factor to consider.
It will be interesting to see if Nighswonger can find a role with the USWNT as we have a year until the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Since she is back in the NWSL playing for Bay FC, she is in a good spot to potentially reclaim her role in the national team.
Euro Era: Arsenal and Aston Villa
On a $100,000 transfer from Gotham, Nighswonger was moved to Arsenal. It was a difficult time as Nighswonger did not experience a lot of playing time and had merely 5 league appearances. There was a lot of hope and potential in this move, yet it seemed to die out quickly.
Nighswonger was sent on loan to Aston Villa to finish off the latter half of the 2025-2026 season. Similarly, there was not much of an opportunity. She only appeared 8 times for the squad. All of this uncertainty in Europe propelled Nighswonger’s return to the NWSL.
Bay FC
Recently, Nighswonger returned to the NWSL. She signed a permanent transfer to Bay FC this month for $200,000. There is no doubt that Nighswonger has strong attacking capabilities, but what Bay FC will hope to instill with the addition of Nighswonger is a tighter defense.
Can Nighswonger change the trajectory and invigorate Bay FC’s culture? We’ll have to find out as this season progresses.
It will be a fun and exciting time for the NWSL and for Nighswonger’s career overall. As mentioned, national team coaches are already planning for the upcoming 2027 FIFA WWC.
