The Governing Board of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) has published the venues for the Spanish Championships of 2027, and one of the most notable decisions concerns one of the distances most sought after by recreational runners. The Spanish Marathon Championship will be held for the first time in history within the Generali Málaga Marathon, whose 2027 edition is scheduled (pending official confirmation of the date) for Sunday, November 7. The designation represents a major recognition for a race that in recent years has continued to grow, becoming one of the principal references on the international calendar. Its fast course, essentially at sea level, has facilitated the achievement of fast times and has attracted an increasing number of runners from around the world.
This news follows a historic 2025 edition. The Generali Málaga Marathon drew 22,000 runners between the marathon and the half marathon, with 11,000 participants in each distance, marking the highest participation on record in its history. The event thus confirmed its consolidation among Spain’s major running events.
It will be the first time, since the championship’s creation in 1928, that the national event is contested in the capital of the Costa del Sol.
In sporting terms, the race also lived a day to remember. The Ugandan Mande Bushendich set a new circuit record by prevailing in a time of 2:06:07, while the Ethiopian Misgane Alemayehu accomplished the same in the women’s category with 2:24:43, also lowering the historical best mark for the event. With this designation, the Generali Málaga Marathon will add a new incentive to a race that is already among the fastest in Europe. In addition to chasing personal bests and international standards, the top Spanish distance runners will battle in 2027 for the national title in a city that continues to gain prominence within both popular and elite athletics.
