Rafael Devers enjoyed plenty of success during his time with the Boston Red Sox, earning three All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards and helping the team win the 2018 World Series.
As a result, the organization rewarded him with a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension in January 2023. While his quality on the field is undeniable, however, attitude-related issues have often caused controversy.
The slugger came into the spotlight once again on Thursday, as analyst and content creator Matthew Crory posted to X about a contentious incident from his time at Fenway Park.

“Information about Rafael Devers’ time in Boston keeps getting weirder. ‘While he was a three-time All-Star in Boston, some in the organization found Devers immature and selfish.
“On more than one occasion, Devers became upset when asked to honor the age-old practice of letting veteran players with more service time hit first in the batting cages. One former Red Sox star threatened to start swinging with Devers still in the cage if he didn’t move,'” Crory posted.
Reacting, several fans left comments taking shots at Rafael Devers.
“Gee no kidding. He was a horrible teammate. Just spoiled and entitled. More proof,” a fan wrote.
“I’ll say it again. The first time I saw him laying on the ground for an extended period of time at first base after a pickoff attempt was when I knew this dude had some serious maturity issues,” another fan commented.

Since joining the San Francisco Giants, one can argue that Rafael Devers has not really lived up to the hype. Hence, Brittany Ghiroli believes the Red Sox might now look back at his massive contract as one that were happy to shed in hindsight.
“Devers is a big bat built for a win-now team,” Ghiroli wrote. “The Giants aren’t contending, and the 29-year-old’s contract may soon be an albatross, one that the Red Sox were happy to shed.”
For the 2026 season, Devers is batting .244 with 24 home runs and 64 RBIs.
