Fans reacted to €125 million summer arrival Yan Diomande starting on the bench in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League opener at home to 2010 champions Inter Milan on Tuesday (September 8).
Jose Mourinho’s side are coming off a first defeat of the season, losing 1-0 at Real Betis in La Liga at the weekend, with Troy Parrott coming off the bench to net an 81st-minute winner. Madrid could have grabbed a late equaliser, but Kylian Mbappe saw his penalty kept out by Betis custodian Alvaro Valles.

Los Blancos now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they open their quest for a record-extending 16th title against their current manager’s former side, Inter.
However, fans are disappointed not to see Diomande start against the Nerazzurri and shared their thoughts:
“Just start Diomande for the love of God,” one tweeted.
“Brahim, Trent, Dumfries all started a game before Diomande, not looking good,” another commented.
“Yan Diomande on the bench again! Why did Real Madrid sign him,” one posted.

The 19-year-old Diomande has made four appearances for his new side – all in La Liga – but is yet to make a goal contribution in 83 minutes of cumulative game time.
What happened the last time Real Madrid played Inter Milan
Real Madrid will have fond memories of their last UEFA Champions League encounter with Inter Milan, as they ran out 2-0 victors at home in the league stage of the 2021-22 edition of the competition.
Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio scored either side of the break at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the Nerazzurri ending the game a man short following Nicolo Barella’s second-half dismissal. Earlier in the season, Los Blancos won 1-0 at the home of the Nerazzurri on matchday one, with Rodrygo Goes netting an 89th-minute winner.
Overall, the record 15-time Champions League winners lead the Nerazzurri 7-5 and are riding a four-game winning streak, having also won both group-stage games in the 2020-21 edition.
