WNBA fans grilled Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham online after the team’s 93-77 loss against the Washington Mystics on Sunday.
The Fever put together a weak performance, heavily bogged down by offensive struggles. The team relied mostly on the star tandem of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Clark led the team with 25 points, while Mitchell added 22 points. They were the only players who scored more than 15 points.
Cunningham, meanwhile, captured the fans’ attention. In seven scoreless minutes off the bench, the former Missouri star went 0-for-2 from the field, grabbed no rebounds, dished no assists, and picked up one foul.
Fans put her on blast after that display
“7 minutes of cardio,” a fan said.
“Player so terrible causes so much controversy,” another fan commented.
“6th player of the year,” one fan joked.
More fans reacted to Sophie Cunningham’s game.
“If it wasn’t for CC. Sophie would have been out of the league,” someone commented.
“She pulled off the Tony Snell game tonight,” a comment read.
“Has anyone ever got their karma served sizzling skillet style this quickly like this before sheesh,” one fan commented.
The last time the Fever played against the Mystics, Cunningham had eight points and three assists off the bench. She helped the team capture a narrow 78-76 win against Washington.
In the three games she played against the Mystics, the 6th Player of the Year candidate averaged 5.6 points and 1.9 rebounds.
How Has Sophie Cunningham Performed This Season?
Sophie Cunningham has been one of the best players for the Indiana Fever this season. Aside from her off-court controversy, Cunningham has contributed well to the team. She has averaged 8.2 points and 2.3 rebounds, shooting 43.2% from beyond the arc.
Cunningham is often the best player off the bench for the Fever. Consequently, the team is fully supporting her Sixth Player of the Year campaign. However, BET MGM has her as the player with the second-best odds to win the award. The player ahead of her is Golden State Valkyries forward Janelle Salaün.
The Valkyries player has a -1000 price tag to win the award.
Sophie Cunningham is entering the Sixth Player of the Year conversation for the first time. After being held to 30 games and starting almost half last season, she has a real path to the award if she finishes strong in Indiana’s last two games.
