Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly has opened up on how he felt when the club signed Bruno Guimaraes this summer. The Gunners spent £75 million to lure Guimaraes to the Emirates from Newcastle United.
The Brazil international added Premier League-proven quality to the reigning champions’ midfield. Guimaraes’ arrival has also increased the competition for places at the club. Lewis-Skelly is among the midfielders battling Guimaraes for a spot in the team.
Thanks for the submission!
To his credit, Lewis-Skelly has established himself as a mainstay in Mikel Arteta’s side in the Premier League this season. And although the young midfielder is fighting for a place with Guimaraes, he insists there is no hard feelings.
Speaking about Guimaraes on Sky Sports, Lewis-Skelly revealed he was excited by the news of the Brazilian’s arrival. The England international also expressed his desire to learn from Guimaraes.
Lewis-Skelly stated:
“Bruno brings energy, experience, intensity. When I heard he was joining I was super happy because it’s someone to learn from and pick the brain of.
“He’s another winner, he’s someone who plays in a similar position to you, so you can always learn from him. Being a sponge to Bruno is going to be really impactful.”
Lewis-Skelly is equally adept at playing left-back for Arsenal. While he has been a regular feature in the line-up as a midfielder this season, the 19-year-old insisted that he is ready to help the team in whatever role he is given.
He added:
“I’m a midfielder. But at the end of the day it’s all down to the team needs. No player, no individual is bigger than the team goal. Whatever has to help the team, I’ll do it.”
Arsenal suffered a 3-0 loss against Brighton last Saturday, when Arteta opted to start Guimaraes ahead of Lewis-Skelly for the first time in the Premier League this season.
Myles Lewis-Skelly hoping to carry Arsenal form into England side
England will face Spain, Czech Republic (twice) and Croatia in the UEFA Nations League during the ongoing international break. After Declan Rice’s decision to withdraw himself from the Three Lions’ squad, Lewis-Skelly could be in line to enjoy more minutes.
The Arsenal midfielder faces competition from the likes of Alex Scott, Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner. Thomas Tuchel will be keen on testing out a few of these players in the upcoming games.
England begin their UEFA Nations League group stage campaign with a game against world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26.
